After taking over 300 photos of Tasmania, we've allowed folks to digest. This is the third and final installment of Tazzy. Hobart, Tasmania's capital city, was very beautiful and peaceful.
Hobart is also the most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, it is one of Australia's oldest cities and the eleventh most populous, with a greater area population of approximately 205,566. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, and also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations. The city is located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River. The skyline is dominated by Mount Wellington at 1,271 metres high.
Port Arthur was also quite beautiful and serene, which belied the history of the Port from the 1830s through the 1850s. Port Arthur is a small town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula. Port Arthur is one of Australia's most significant heritage areas and the open air museum is officially Tasmania's top tourist attraction. Known for its harsh conditions, dark history and stark beauty, it is located approximately 60 km south east of the state capital, Hobart. In 1996 it was the scene of the worst mass murder event in Australian history where 35 lives were taken. Bodie remembers that day in April, 1996 and the memorial is quite a moving tribute to the victims.
We then headed to Bicheno Bay for a night....oceans tend to call on all of us. Purely wonderful. And yes, the Kookaburras were at our door once again.
Cheers all!
