We headed on a 400 kilometre round trip to Mansfield today (eastern Victoria) for a BBQ with some of our good friends, Gary and Rhonda Morgan from Ballarat. Gary is the CEO of Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre in Melbourne. Bodie met Gary while in Australia last year, and we hosted Gary during his visit to the States in July 2007.
The scenery of Mansfield became well known as the location for the film "The Man From Snowy River". Many local horsemen and women rode in the film and they still hold the annual 'Crack's Cup' each November where riders traverse a mountainous track through tall mountain ash, cross rivers and descend steep hills, demonstrating traditional bush skills of both horse and rider.
We actually had lunch at a resort cottage which normally would be on Lake Eildon's shores. However, given that this part of the country is still deep in the throws of a severe drought (@12 years), the water is nearly 2 kilometres away from the docks. In some of the pictures, you can see the old shoreline and an abandoned house boat. Just after taking this picture, a mob of grey kangaroos (@15 of them) came hopping by with all the kids being able to see one mom carrying her young. Oh, if I only had a pouch!
A great Sunday with highs near 22 deg C., good food, good wine and great wrestling/playing opportunities!
