Yesterday was a National Day of Mourning here in Australia. Of course this had to happen in the face of the recent tragedy that engulfed large parts of Victoria. With great respect for all, many chose to see Sunday, however, as a day of celebration.
Many celebrated the ultimate victory over this inferno and the ordinary men and women who became true heroes in achieving this. We all celebrate the lives of those lost who were taken too early by the fires and of those who survived but lost almost everything else.
Many celebrated the anonymous people whose care, empathy and generosity have yet again shown the genuine Australian character that Heather and I have come to know and love. All celebrated the indomitable spirit of those who, having lost everything, are choosing to build their lives again in the communities of which they feel so much a part.
On a lighter note, many of us here had the wonderful opportunity to meet Princess Anne who came down for the Memorial at the request of her Mother, Queen Elizabeth. Of course those of us not from Commonwealth countries had it easy, and we did have the option of a curtsy or bow......quickly followed with the greeting of "your Royal Highness". We chose not to, but still had a great chat with the Princess. Should have gone with the bow I suppose.
